Once upon a time, there were a married couple named Timothy Thigpen and Kimberly Clark. They had 2 children who were twins; Timothy Junior and Lulu.
Timothy Junior exercises simply by walking around the house.
Lulu, on the other hand, loves to exercise by going to a special place called Planet Fitness. She wishes for herself to be the best exerciser in the United States. She tries all of the following machines:
- Hand cycle (40 minutes)
- Bike machine (35 minutes)
- Leg press (60 minutes)
- Tricep machine (5 minutes)
Every Sunday Lulu gets a ribbon that represents how good of an exerciser she is on the machine. The ribbon has a place number standing for how well she did among the people who exercised on the same kind of machine and a color that stands for the place. It goes like this:
First place is blue. Second place is red. Third place is white. Fourth place is yellow. Fifth place is green. Sixth place is pink. Seventh place is violet. Eighth place is maroon. Ninth place is orange. Tenth place is light green. Eleventh place is light blue. Twelfth place is brown. Any place worse than twelfth is simply participation, which is gray. Lulu's goal is to get one of the top 12 places every time.
The Planet Fitness building has 2 floors. On the lower floor there are machines where you sit on, as well as a few where you lie down on. The machines for standing on are on the upper floor.
Every time Lulu gets a ribbon, she organizes the ribbons by place. This is a nice thing because Planet Fitness is her favorite part of her life.
One day Lulu learned a surprise about the machine levels. She initially learned that there are exactly 6 levels numbered 1 through 6. She was hoping she could get to level 6 of each machine she practiced. But later she learned that each of the first 5 levels is in fact 10 different levels, each of which has the same button because they are all the same "level" according to how they designate them, but are 10 separate levels to Lulu. The levels are officially designated with decimals that range from 1.0 to 6.0. Lulu, who is very literal with numbers, counts the levels simply as levels 1 to 51. To find the number Lulu uses, just take the decimal number they designate it as (let's use 2.5 as an example) multiply by 10 and subtract 9. The level they call level 2.5 Lulu calls level 16. Everyone in Lulu's family except Jessie (Timothy's twin sister) understands that this is Lulu's way of thinking and is reasonable to Lulu's perspective.
